BMW F 450 GS launch in India

Last November at EICMA, BMW unveiled the Concept F 450 GS, previewing a future middleweight adventure motorcycle slotted between the G 310 GS and larger F 800/900 GS models. Since then, prototypes of the impending F 450 GS have appeared in numerous spy photographs published online, illuminating details but leaving questions. We now have a more definitive view of the production F 450 GS thanks to design filings BMW recently submitted to the United Kingdom’s intellectual property office.

The submitted design drawings reveal notable changes from

the concept and align with spy shots, providing clarity without obstructing layers. Positioning one illustration over a photograph of the prototype highlights disparities – the filings include mirrors, turn signals, reflectors and passenger provisions, signifying a street-legal bike unlike the concept. Rather than wire-spoke wheels, the drawings show five-spoke cast units resembling those fitted to the F 900 R.

Overall bodywork remains largely consistent,

with a few key variances. The trim above the roundel badge is substantially truncated, with a lower profile ending just under the handlebar clamp. Wind protection also differs completely, adopting a distinct profile versus the concept’s form.

Moving rearward, the dark partition spanning the fuel tank and view of the trellis frame receives a reshaped cutaway. Additionally, the connecting segment leading to the front of the seat now sports a lined texture versus a seamless surface.

The prototype showcased an intriguing design choice with a strip

of light steel piping extending rearward from the subframe, clearly meant to carry luggage. BMW’s engineers further developed this idea, sheathing the subframe in additional bodywork and incorporating what appeared to be mounting points below the passenger seat for panniers or other cargo. To allow room for both supplies and a second rider, the exhaust routing was reworked to run the muffler alongside the rear wheel.

The frame, engine and suspension components seemed identical in form to the original concept. B

MW claims the prototype’s powerplant generates 47 horsepower, right at the limit for maintaining status in Europe’s A2 licensing class. We can expect the production model will retain this specification.

Their filings also depict the front fork as fully adjustable,

though we can only speculate without examining it in person. Records state the prototype tipped the scales at 385 pounds, a weight BMW strived for to optimize power-to-weight under A2 regulations. Of course, we have no way to verify such figures based on schematics alone.

It’s reasonable to predict BMW will make the production F 450 GS

official this coming fall, perhaps unveiling it at EICMA where the concept first appeared. Only then will they release technical details, allowing fair assessment of how this newcomer compares against established competitors like the KTM 390 Adventure R, CFMOTO Ibex 450 and Moto Morini Alltrhike.
